PIONEER at PSI: A Next-generation Rare Pion Decay Experiment
Bob Velghe (TRIUMF)
Description :

The new PIONEER experiment, hosted by the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), aims to measure the branching ratio $R_{e/\mu} = \Gamma\left(\pi^+ \to e^+ \nu (\gamma)\right)/\Gamma\left(\pi^+ \to \mu^+ \nu (\gamma)\right)$ with a 0.01 % uncertainty. This measurement will provide the best test of electron-muon universality in weak interactions. Thanks to exceptionally precise theoretical predictions, $R_{e/\mu}$ will be able to probe many extensions of the Standard Model, specifically modified couplings of the W-boson to leptons. This experimental program is particularly timely given the changing landscape of flavor anomalies reported in the last decade. In a later phase, PIONEER will explore other precision measurements, including pion beta decay. The chosen pion decay-at-rest technique builds upon the successful PIENU and PEN experiments. A high-intensity pion beam will be stopped in an active silicon target, surrounded by a 25-radiation length liquid xenon electromagnetic calorimeter. An intense detector R&D program has been started.
